EOL Tester for Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS)

Ensuring the Efficiency and Safety of Rechargeable Batteries

Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS) are essential for managing and protecting rechargeable batteries, especially in applications such as Electric Vehicles (EVs), Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and consumer electronics. These systems are key in optimizing performance, extending battery lifespan, and ensuring safety.

Key Functions of BMS:

  • Monitoring: The BMS continuously monitors essential battery parameters such as voltage, current, and temperature for each cell.
  • Balancing: It ensures that all cells are balanced, preventing degradation and enhancing battery lifespan.
  • Safety Protection: It protects the battery from over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, and over-temperature conditions.
  • State Estimation: It calculates the State of Charge (SoC) and State of Health (SoH) to provide insights into remaining capacity and overall battery condition.
  • Communication Interfaces: The BMS communicates with external systems, such as the CAN bus in electric vehicles, allowing for remote control and diagnostics.

To ensure the BMS functions properly, it is crucial to perform testing during the manufacturing process. These tests ensure the system meets quality standards and reduce field rejections.

Generation RFID’s Custom Solution for BMS Testing

Generation RFID has developed a custom EOL test solution that guarantees 100% coverage of all the critical BMS functions, including:

  • MCU Flashing with both bootloader and application.
  • Accurate Cell Voltage and Current Measurement with external precision resistive loads.
  • Cell Balancing features.
  • Measure of the bidirectional current capability.
  • Temperature validation via the integrated NTC.
  • Communication protocols based on Ethernet, CAN and USB.
  • ICT for the most critical passive components and internal voltages.
  • Low power mode current measurement.

These tests are performed using the LynxICT test board, controlled via CAN, ensuring that each BMS unit is fully functional before deployment.
